Persona 5 is an urban fantasy RPG that takes place in a modern Tokyo almost identical to our own. The protagonists are a group of teens, called the Phantom Thieves, who can use a phone app to access a universe parallel with our own where corrupt adults have ‘Palaces’. These Palaces reflect the distorted desires of their person and the Thieves face off against the person’s Shadow to steal the source of their distortion, their Treasure. This frees the adult of their distorted desire, causing them to reform and confess their crimes. Makoto is the second person to join the Phantom Thieves after the founding members, and becomes a party member in the third Palace. Makoto quickly becomes a sort of vice leader of the Phantom Thieves and has a key part in the plot development due to her access to sensitive material and ability to strategize.
